The Conseil des arts de Montréal is pleased to welcome Malcom Odd for the 11th edition of the Regard sur Montréal film residency. Known for his uncompromising artistic integrity, Malcom will no doubt bring a unique and surprising perspective to this signature program.
Valued at $75,000, the residency supports emerging, culturally diverse professional artists working in film and video by giving them an opportunity to carve out a bigger place for themselves in the Québec media landscape.
The artist will devote 11 months to making a documentary entitled Au cœur du Mont-Habité. This short film, which will be presented at the 2025 edition of the Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM), promises to be a thought-provoking and captivating cinematic experience.
Au cœur du Mont-Habité
Malcom Odd’s documentary Au cœur du Mont-Habité takes us into the heart of painter Manuel Mathieu’s creative process. Tracing the development and creation of Mathieu’s monumental work for Montréal’s Réseau express métropolitain (REM), the filmmaker explores how public art acts as a powerful vehicle for cultural dissemination.
The intimate conversations between the two artists offer a unique perspective on Tiohtià:ke, Montréal, as seen by an internationally renowned artist who has chosen to make it his adopted home. Far from sticking to beaten paths, this cinematic project enriches our understanding of Montreal’s collective memory and reveals how public art can help forge new ties between communities.
Malcom Odd
As a multidisciplinary artist whose practice challenges and subverts post-colonial realities, Malcom Odd rejects linear narratives and hegemonic norms. His transdisciplinary artistic approach opens up avenues of solidarity rooted in so-called peripheral cultures.
Defying our collective amnesia, his projects—which include Ciné Cozry and the Afro-Hivernal exhibition—aim to bring people together and criticize mercantile systems and the commodification of culture. His practice distances itself from the concept of the individual to convey narratives that are both polyphonic and singular, embracing movements that position the intimate as political and working to repair the connections between memory, power and empowerment.
In his work, the artist seeks to heal the fractures left by various genocides and incidents of social and systemic violence. This is one artist’s residency you’ll want to keep an eye on!
